Musing with Raheenah: Questions to ask yourself before going into a relationship

Someone commented on one of my posts and asked me to write about what I think about relationships. Before I proceed I am not a relationship expert but I'll tell you what I think and I'll try to make it short and elucidated.

I always say you need God's guidance and assurance before doing anything. Before you go into a relationship you have to pray about it and believe God knows best. If it's good and your intentions are clear He will show you. You will definitely see signs, if the signs are good, go for it and if they aren't please don't. I won't say going into one is inappropriate because before you get married, you want to know who you are going to spend the rest of your life with, you want to know if you can cope with the odds. Besides as a Muslim, marriage is half of your deen (faith).

Before you go into a relationship you should ask yourself these questions:

- Does the person believe in God?
- Have you prayed about it?
- If you just ended a relationship, are you ready?
- Are you happy with yourself? because you can't go into a relationship if you aren't happy withourself. And are you proud of yourself?
- Are your feelings true?
- Are you mature spiritually, physically, and emotionally?
- Do you have a good character? This speaks for itself.
- Have you written four most important qualities you want in a partner? and can you see that in the person?
- Have you asked what the person really want' in the relationship? If you're satisfied go for it but don't settle for less
- Can the person make your life better and vice versa?

If you can answer these questions then I think you're good to go.

PS: Say no to pre-marital sex. It's inappropriate for so many reasons.

I hope my post was helpful

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.  {Al-Baqarah 2:177}
