I'm sure you have heard it times without number but do you really understand this phrase "GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES."
One day, the prophet, peace be upon him noticed a Bedouin leaving his carmel without tying it. He asked the Bedouin, "why didn't you tie down your carmel". The Bedouin answered "I put my trust in Allah". The prophet peace be upon him then said "Tie your camel first, then put your trust in Allah.
God helps those who help themselves. We have to make righteous efforts and ask God to see us through. When God sees what we develop within ourselves through our efforts then we will become worthy of His help.

Verily never will God change the condition of a people until they change it themselves {Ar-Ra'd 13:11}

Here's a short story:
A master and his disciple were riding across the Saudi Arabian desert. The master made use of every moment of their ride to teach the disciple about faith. "Trust in God," he said "God will never abandon us." At night, in their camp, the master asked the disciple to tie the horses to a nearby rock. The disciple went to the rock, and remembered what the master taught him: "He must be testing me" he thought. "I should leave the horses to God" and he left the horses unfettered. In the morning, the disciple saw that the horses disappeared, he went back to his master. "You know nothing about God," he exclaimed. "I left the horses in His care and now the animals are gone." the master answered "God wanted to care for the horses but to do that, He needed your hands to tie them"

Most people use the excuse that God will provide according to His will. If you want a promotion, you'll have to pray hard, work hard, sleep less to get there. That's working for what you want and also acknowledging that with God nothing is impossible. Even if it's about an exam, you pray to God and read well. Then He'll make it easy for you. If you want a good partner, pray to God, build your character and go out to look for one.
God is the most Merciful & best Provider. He has blessed us in different ways so all we need to do is to reach out for it and understand that we need to work for what we want.
Nothing happens by itself, all will come your way once you acknowledge that you have to make it come your way by your own effort. Guidance isn't going to come down upon you while you're sleeping. You have to strive for it to attain it.
May Almighty God make your effort a victory and may He make it easy for you to obey His commands.

And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allah at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And we will reward the grateful. {Al-Imran 3:145}
